What Does BioGro Organic Certified Actually Mean — And Why Does It Matter for Your Skin?

If you've noticed the BioGro certified organic logo on our products, you might be wondering what it actually means in practice. It's not just a badge — it's one of the most rigorous third-party certifications available in New Zealand and Australia, and it tells you something important about every ingredient that goes on your skin.

Who Is BioGro?

BioGro is New Zealand's leading organic certification body, operating since 1983. They certify everything from food and farming to skincare and personal care products against internationally recognised organic standards. When a product carries the BioGro logo, it means an independent auditor has verified the claims — not just taken a brand's word for it.

What the Certification Actually Covers

For a skincare or haircare product to earn BioGro certification, it has to meet strict requirements across the entire production chain:

Organic ingredients must be certified organic and sourced from approved suppliers.

No synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or artificial fertilisers used in growing the raw materials.

No genetically modified organisms (GMOs) — at any point in the supply chain.

Prohibited ingredients include synthetic fragrances, parabens, petroleum-derived ingredients, phthalates, and many other synthetic chemicals commonly found in conventional skincare.

Manufacturing processes must meet organic standards — including how products are processed, stored, and handled.

Annual audits by a BioGro inspector ensure ongoing compliance — certification isn't a one-off tick.

Why This Matters for Your Skin

Your skin absorbs what you put on it. Research suggests that ingredients applied topically can enter the bloodstream, which is why what's in your skincare is worth paying attention to — particularly if you use products daily or over large areas of the body.

Organic certification gives you confidence that the botanicals in your products were grown without synthetic chemical residues, and that the formulation itself avoids a long list of synthetic additives that have raised questions in safety research. It doesn't mean every ingredient is perfect for every person — but it does mean the ingredient selection starts from a more transparent place.

The Difference Between "Natural" and Certified Organic

This is important. In New Zealand, any brand can call itself "natural" — there's no regulation around that word. "Organic" is also frequently used on labels without any independent verification. BioGro certification is different because it involves external auditing against a defined standard. You're not relying on a brand's own claims.

That distinction matters to us. It's why we pursued certification rather than simply using the language.

What It Means for the Environment

Organic farming practices are better for soil health, water quality, and biodiversity. By choosing certified organic products, you're also supporting agricultural systems that don't rely on synthetic chemical inputs. It's a small choice with a broader reach.

How to Spot the Real Thing

Look for the BioGro logo on the product label. You can also verify any certified business directly on the BioGro website at biogro.co.nz. If a product claims to be organic without a third-party certification logo, it's worth asking who verified that.

At Honest Skincare, we think you deserve to know exactly what's in the products you use — and why. BioGro certification is one way we back that up with something more than a promise.
